Writers' Notes and Disclaimer
Dear Reader and fellow Adventurer,
Among these pages you will discover the tumultuous tale of the Dark Guards – their rise and falls, and some stories that have never before been revealed. Before you dive in and experience it on your own, we have a few kind words of advice.
Firstly, it is most preferable to read them as a series – start from the beginning and make your way through the story chronologically. Otherwise, some confusion might occur and some references to names and events left unclear.
Please bear in mind that these are stories based on the real larp storylines. It is a hard task to weave an exciting and coherent narrative from a game that is often chaotic and sometimes nonsensical. So, for the purposes of plot and story arcs, some of the events might be slightly altered or embellished. The methodology behind it was simple: we imagined a world where the events that we’ve lived existed, and then grounded everything in this fantasy. So, for example, a mere camp can be presented as a fortress, a group of 30 is a mighty army and so forth. This is how the players would imagine their surroundings when they were in character, immersing themselves in the fantasy. This is what we’ve presented here. Moreover, the tone of the texts are delivered as if written by a nameless historian from the Dragon World, it is a saga conceived from inside of its world. The whole point is to make the stories more immersive and make the imaginary world of the game come to life on these pages.
Another very important point to make is that this content is highly subjective by nature. This shouldn’t be a news flash to anyone but we feel like it needs to be highlighted anyways: every piece of creative writing is highly subjective, so is this one. This is the point of view through which some of the people of the Dark Guard have experienced the events of the LARP games. It doesn’t claim any objectivity and it certainly doesn’t claim that this is the one true history of the game’s events.
Furthermore, keeping in mind the subjective nature and the point of view, it must be said that the protagonists of the story are The Dark Guard. So, naturally some of the other factions or characters might be vilified, as a good story needs conflict and it is only as good as its villain. There are actual people behind the characters in these stories, so please do not take offence, this is merely a work of fiction for entertainment purposes. We love and respect our fellow roleplayers deeply, and this is what prompted the creation of the stories, sharing with the community, not trying to portray certain people in certain light. On the other hand, we are absolutely sure that as a clan that strives for conflict in-game, the Dark Guard has been the villain in many other stories, and we are sure you will be able to see that in these pages. Remember conflict drives the story, it is the fuel of drama, it is what makes it exciting; that being said, as players, The Dark Guards aim to create conflict only in-game, as a means to drive action and the storyline.
Thank you very much our beloved Reader for heeding our advice. Without further ado, we invite you now to indulge and savour the tales we bring you. Please enjoy the stories in these pages and immerse yourself into the world we’ve created in our collective consciousness, have fun with it as you would with any other fiction and let your imagination wild!
